History of Kumarakom

During Ancient days Kumarakom comes under the Jurisdiction of Thekkumkur Kingdom.  There exists clashes and fighting among the local Kings and they mainly used small boats such as “Chundam vallam”. At that time Vembanad Lake is like a war zone.
Kumarakom is blessed with a variety of Flora and Fauna. Bird sanctuary in Kumarakom is world famous. The bird sanctuary is extended over 14 acres. The climatic condition is good in Kumarakom, which consist of two monsoons and the average rainfall is about 1100mm.



Fishing, Agriculture and Houseboat Tourism are the main source of income in Kumarakom. Kumarakom area is enriched with paddy fields and coconut groves. Meenachil river is the main source for water. There exist a bund called “Thaneermukam bund” which prevents the mixing up of salt water with pure water in the area. Kumarakom is very famous for its religious harmony. Hinduism, Christianity are the major religions present.


Tourism in Kumarakom is mainly around Vembanad Lake. There exist several luxury and budget resorts for tourist. These resorts provide facilities for fishing, yachting etc for tourist. There exists two hour canoe trip which is very cheap. Aruvikkuzi waterfalls,Bay Island Drift museum are other tourist attractions.In 2005 Kerala State Government declared Kumarakom as Special Tourism Zone.
